Bismarck, N.D. (KCND) - A Grand Forks lawmaker wants to raise the speed limit on North Dakota’s Interstate highways to 80 mph.
"Well, South Dakota has it, Montana has it," Republican Senator Lonnie Laffen said. "Everybody drives that speed anyway."
Laffen is sponsoring a bill in the 2017 Legislature to do just that.
"Increased speed just helps business get their work done," Laffen said. "We have a lot of miles to cover trying to do the work out west and out east, a faster speed limit would help."
Laffen says the Interstates were designed for faster speeds. And he says vehicles are safer than they used to be. He’s checked with surrounding states and he has found no evidence that higher speeds lead to more accidents.
