BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem is warning residents of a scam involving fake Internal Revenue Service enforcement calls.

Stenehjem says residents continue to fall victim to the scam, even though numerous warnings about the calls have been issued in the last three years.

The scam artists pretend to be IRS enforcement agents and claim the only way the victim can avoid being arrested is to pay off the alleged tax debt immediately.

The ruse usually involves reloadable prepaid cards, but recent victims report being instructed to buy hundreds of dollars in iTunes and other name brand gift cards. The victims are then asked to read off numbers from the cards.

Stenehjem says anyone who receives a phony IRS call should report it to the United States Treasury at 1-800-366-4484.
