Commissioners okay plan for deputies to relieve Moorhead officers

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) - The Clay County Commission has approved an agreement for the Clay County Sheriff’s office to provide temporary assistance to the Moorhead Police Dept.

Off-duty deputies will help fill patrol officer shifts that would normally be staffed by police. Moorhead Police Chief Dave Ebinger says injuries, military deployments and competition have left the department about 20 officers short.

“I’m really grateful. My people need to stand down a little bit” Ebinger said. “In a lot of cases, they’re working extended shifts and working overtime shifts to the point where they’re exhausted.”

Deputies will be paid one-and-a- half times their regular salary. The city will also pay a flat $100 fee each time a county squad car is used for a nine-hour shift.

The agreement can be terminated by either party with a 30-day notice.
