FARGO (KFGO) - JC Penney plans to shut down 138 stores this year, including 14 stores in the Dakotas and Minnesota.
In North Dakota, the company will close stores in Dickinson, Jamestown and Wahpeton.
Eight locations will close in Minnesota; they include Baxter, Fairmont, Faribault, Hibbing, Hutchinson, Red Wing, Thief River Falls and Winona.
In South Dakota, Penney's will close in Mitchell, Pierre, Watertown and Yankton.
Penney's says the closings are necessary for "long-term profitability." The company says about 5,000 jobs across the nation will be affected.
