TABOR, MINNESOTA (KFGO) - A man is dead after a shooting incident near the tiny northwestern Minnesota town of Tabor, about 30 miles north of Crookston.
A rural mail carrier reported he heard two gunshots shortly before 11:30 a.m. Monday which shattered the rear window of his vehicle. A Polk County deputy sheriff who responded to the call was then confronted by a man with a rifle. The officer called for backup and the man then fired a shot at the deputy, hitting the squad car.
That led to a several hour long stand-off involving a dozen law enforcement agencies, including the Grand Forks Regional Swat team. According to the sheriff's office, one officer returned fire during the incident
The man was later found dead outside his home with a high powered rifle. It is not known if he was hit by gunfire. The body has been sent to the Grand Forks Medical Examiner's office for an autopsy. The names of the law officers involved and the victim will be released later.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension and the Polk County Sheriff's office are handling the investigation.
