FARGO (KFGO) - Petitions to recall Fargo City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn started circulating Monday and the head of the petitioning committee is confident they will have more than enough signatures to trigger the recall.
Piepkorn says he has been critical of the cost of refugee resettlment asking some tough questions. However, petition backers say it's an attack on the refugee population of Fargo. Petition language calls Piepkorn's actions "wrong-headed, short-sighted, devisive and dangerous."
Andrew Lenzmeier, chairman of the recall sponsoring committee says the more than two dozen people now circulating recall petitions have been trained on the law to ensure those signing the petition meet requirements to vote in Fargo. He says the matter is so important they want to do it right.
The group needs the signatures of just over 3500 eligible voters submitted to the city auditor's office by May 12th. The auditor then has 30 days to verify signatures and then set an election date, which would likely be sometime late this summer or early fall.
