Former Gov. Schafer says Burgum should veto concealed gun bill

FARGO (KFGO) - Former North Dakota Gov. Ed Schafer is urging Gov. Doug Burgum to veto a bill that would give qualified people permission to carry a concealed gun without a permit. The legislation also allows people 21 and older to bypass background checks and gun safety classes.

During an interview on KFGO's "News & Views", Schafer said Burgum should reject the legislation. “I urge him to veto that bill” Schafer said. “I think it’s a mistake.  We're going back to the 'Old West, high noon, lets all carry a gun; if we get into an argument...I'm going to start shooting at em'" attitude.

Schafer says another high-profile bill that would legalize up to six state-owned casinos is also a bad idea. “I would never sign that bill” according to Schafer. “If it was unanimous in the legislature, that put increased gambling in the state of North Dakota on my desk, it would not have been signed.”

The casino bill will be reconsidered this week by the House Judiciary Committee. The gun proposal is on its way to the governor’s office for Burgum’s review.
