FARGO, N.D. - A Fargo man charged with murder in the stabbing death of his friend last Christmas Eve has been sentenced to serve six years in prison on a reduced charge.

Timothy Porter reached a deal with prosecutors and pleaded guilty to manslaughter Wednesday. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison with four years suspended.

Authorities say Porter stabbed 26-year-old Derek Bjarnason in the chest at Porter's home after a night of drinking. Bjarnason died later that day at a hospital.

Court documents show Porter was given credit for about four months already spent behind bars. He'll be on probation for five years after his prison term. He also must pay $810 in fees.
