MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) - After more than a decade of planning, ground was finally broken Tuesday for the new Clay County jail and Law Enforcement Center in Moorhead.
The $53 million facility will replace the current jail, which is the oldest county jail in Minnesota.
Sheriff Bill Bergquist says the state-of-the-art project has been years in the making. “When I first got elected 14 years ago, the county administrator told me to get ready to start planning a jail” Bergquist said. “I want to extend a ‘thank you’ to everyone who took part in the many stages of the planning.”
Pending approval by the legislature, the new jail will be funded by a county-wide half-cent sales tax, which was previously approved by voters.
The project has been endorsed by area law enforcement groups and the Fargo-Moorhead, West Fargo Area Chamber of Commerce.
