FARGO (KFGO-AM) - North Dakota Republican governor candidate Doug Burgum has released a statement regarding the controversial Dakota Access pipeline project.

"I've been following the situation closely and am awaiting the court’s decision" Burgum said in a written statement.  "North Dakota needs to be a state of opportunity and welcoming to energy expansion with a safe, smart approach."

Burgum's statement was released as a federal judge decides whether to grant a temporary restraining order to stop the pipeline's construction near Cannon Ball, ND.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe is suing the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.  Tribal leaders say the project would violate sacred and culturally sensitive grounds.

Angry protesters faced off with construction workers at the site on Saturday.
