MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO) - The federal government is suing the city of Cass Lake, Minn. for the costs of removing contaminated soil from a landfill and the site of a former paper company.
Federal court documents say wood-treating activities began on the site of the former St. Regis Paper Company in the 1950s. The government says hazardous chemicals were disposed of in several areas on the site, including the city-owned landfill.
The complaint says arsenic and PCP were among the chemicals that contaminated the soil and groundwater.
The 163-acre site is located on the leech lake band of ojibwe indian reservation.
