FARGO, N.D. (KFGO) - Fargo celebrates the second annual Indigenous Peoples Day instead of Columbus Day Monday.

Meant to celebrate the history and contributions of Native Americans, the event will include a free educational program at Agassiz School.

Fargo approved a resolution two years ago, recognizing the second Monday of October as Indigenous People's Day. The theme of today's event is "Strengthening Community Through Reconciliation and Healing." Activists argued that the holiday, and other memorials to Columbus honored his brutal history.
