BISMARCK - North Dakota Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread says President Donald Trump's plan to stop payments to insurers under the Obama-era health care law could potentially raise health insurance costs as much as 10 percent for up to 42,000 state residents.

Godfread plans to ask insurers who sell policies on the health insurance exchange to absorb some of the impact to keep costs down for consumers.

Godfread says the development also has the potential to bring another insurer back into the North Dakota insurance marketplace. Medica earlier announced it was leaving due to uncertainty over the cost-sharing reductions.

The subsidies help make insurance affordable for people with modest incomes. A coalition of state attorneys general is planning to sue. The North Dakota attorney general office isn't commenting on whether it's included.
