MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation has completed updates to the I-94 Red River Bridge to make it safer for winter drivers. The bridges are notorious for crashes and the anti-icing system has been replaced. It was first installed about 15 years ago.
MNDOT spokesman Jerimiah Moerke says the original equipment was so old, replacement parts could not be found.
He says the new system is not fool-proof. When the temperature drops below 6 degrees on the bridge decks, the chemicals are not effective and road crews must salt and sand the bridges.
