FARGO (KFGO-AM) - North Dakota's chief federal prosecutor is turning to local religious leaders to get the word out about the dangers of the opiate crisis.

U.S. Attorney Chris Myers tells KFGO News that he's asking Fargo-Moorhead area clergy members to use their influence and pulpits to spread the message.

Myers says faith leaders will be briefed on the proposal during an upcoming meeting, which many have pledged to attend.

"Faith leaders have an enormous pulpit and sphere of influence" according to Myers.  "They're also in a position to help folks with support; especially those folks who don't have the family support they need to battle this very difficult addiction."

“All faiths, from Catholic to Muslim to Jewish to Protestant; all faiths have been invited” Myers said. “We expect all those folks to show up. It’s an exciting partnership.”

Myers says the proposal has already received a "great response" from the religious community. He says enlisting faith leaders is one of many strategies used to combat the opiate crisis.
