FARGO (KFGO) - Major downtown Fargo access routes are re-opening after being closed for months because of re-construction work and new flood protection projects.

City division engineer Nathan Boerboom says by the end of Thursday, crews will re-open the closed portion of 1st Avenue, North, including the 1st Avenue Bridge into Moorhead. The routes were closed in April. Friday, Second Street South, between Main Avenue and Fourth Street will reopen. It's been closed since April. Boerboom says that should greatly reduce congestion during peak travel times downtown.

After the road reopens Friday, there will be some temporary turning restrictions in place. Drivers heading north along 2nd St. S will only be able to make a right-hand turn at Main Ave. All left hand turns at this intersection will be restricted because traffic signals aren't operating due to reconstruction work north of Main.

Boerboom says construction on the permanent flood wall from NP Avenue to the underpass north of 4th Avenue North should be completed soon, which will allow all of 2nd Street North to re-open by early November. All or parts of that route have been closed since last fall.
