ND Red Cross volunteers heading to Florida

Fargo, N.D. (KFGO) - American Red Cross volunteers and emergency response vehicles from North Dakota are deploying to Florida ahead of Hurricane Matthew.

"With the anticipation for this storm and how significant it could be we need to have things there and ready to go and respond as quickly as possible," Brian Shawn, the Regional Communications Officer for the Red Cross, said. "So, that's why were are already sending people down there. And why we've actually had a couple of other people from South Dakota that went on Sunday to go down there and already prepare for shelters and feeding operations just because we anticipate this to be a large scale event."

"It's easier for us to get everything ready and prepared because we dont have volunteers in that are in the path of this storm, Shawn added. "You know it's not close but we're not in California either, so, it's an opportunity for us to get people on the road and be ready to go right away today and get on the ground and help. So, I think that's the biggest reason why North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota have been targeted."

Four North Dakota volunteers, 2 from Minot, 2 from the Red River Valley, and three response vehicles left for Tallahasse, FL Thursday.
