FARGO (KFGO) - Monday, top executives from FedEx appear before the Fargo City Commission to clarify their position on a property tax break they received for the company's new facility in Fargo.
Commissioners approved the 10 year PILOT, short or payment in lieu of taxes, worth more than $600,000, on a 3-2 vote last month. That raised questions. City Commissioner Tony Gehrig says the incentive wasn't necessary because a FedEx representative told commissioners before the vote that the facility would move to Fargo regardless.
But Mayor Tim Mahoney says the employee did not understand the ramifications of that answer. Mahoney says negotiations underway for more than a year regarding the company move to Fargo, made it clear the PILOT was an integral part of the plan.
Gehrig will ask other commissioners to reconsider their decision and re-vote on the tax break.
Gehrig and Commissioner Tony Grindberg voted against the property tax incentive July 18.
