Vintage voting booths found buried in Clay Co. courthouse

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) - Some housecleaning in the basement of the Clay County courthouse turned up a couple of surprises.

An employee recently discovered two vintage voting booths that date back to the 1940's. Clay County Deputy Auditor Nancy Krenelka says nobody at the courthouse knew about the voting booths because they had been stashed away for decades.

“The maintenance department found them underneath one of the stairways in a large metal box. They asked me if I wanted them and I said ‘sure’.”

Krenelka was determined to make them suitable to use during this year's election.  “We got them set up and they were a little funky-smelling” Krenelka said.  “I took (the curtains) home, I bleached them and washed them and ironed them.”

Krenelka says the aluminum booths, complete with red, white and blue canvas curtains, are popular with voters. They're located on the second floor of the courthouse.
