WAHPETON, N.D. (AP) - Officials are building a new habitat for zebras at the Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton as part of a levee encroachment removal project and renovating the center where primates are housed.
Because the zoo is accredited with the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, architects had to follow special requirements when designing the zebra building.
Interstate Engineering officials showed Wahpeton's flood protection committee plans for the project's second phase Wednesday.
Interstate will advertise bids for general construction, electrical work and mechanical work during three consecutive Sundays. The advertisements for the bids, which will be opened Nov. 15, were authorized with a 3-0 vote.
Interstate officials estimate the cost for the zebra building and renovations of the Roger Jensen Center will cost over $1.6 million.
