Fargo's sometimes confusing backyard chicken law to be updated

FARGO (KFGO) - The first step in clarifying Fargo's somewhat murky law allowing chickens to be reared in city limits is expected to get an okay from city commissioners Monday night.

Fargo Cass Public Health Director Ruth Roman admits, the codes on raising urban chickens are confusing.

She says there are people keeping chickens but there's a discrepency within city codes where chickens are allowed but not in others.  She says some people either complaining or asking questions are not always getting the right answers.

City commissioners are being asked to approve a motion to have the city attorney's office work with public health and any other city departments to update the law to more clearly allow residential chicken keeping.

Moorhead and West Fargo have chicken bans. In the past, the subject turned into a hot-button issue whenever changes have been talked about.
