DEVILS LAKE, N.D. (AP) - A divided Devils Lake City Commission has voted to continue prohibiting city residents from owning pit bulls and related dog breeds.
The ban on pit bulls, Staffordshire terriers and mixes of the two breeds has been in place since 1987. The commission last month directed the city attorney to draft an ordinance that would end the ban.
Mayor Dick Johnson tells KZZY radio that since then, the message he heard from residents was that they don't want pit bulls in the city. He cast the deciding vote in a 3-2 decision this week to uphold the ban.
