FARGO (KFGO) - A mural taken from a photo of climate activist Greta Thunberg will go on permanent display in March in downtown Fargo. The mural will be located in an alley adjacent to the Front Street Taproom on Main Avenue.

The photo was taken by North Dakota artist/photographer Shane Balkowitsch. The mural is a large representation of the original wet plate glass photograph which shows Thunberg standing in a field on the Standing Rock Sioux Indian Reservation.

Balkowitsch originally planned to display the mural on the outside wall of a bakery in Bismarck, but the plans were scrapped after threats of a boycott and vandalism.

"I want to thank the citizens of Fargo for their kindness and generosity and grassroots effort in giving a safe haven for this piece of art” Balkowitsch said. “We must stand up for each other, we must look to each other for support and kindness. I am not from Fargo but the fact that this work is being embraced means the world to me at this time."

The original wet plate photo is now in the permanent archives of the Library of Congress.

FARGO, N.D. - The Fargo-Moorhead Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Human Trafficking Task Force held their fifth march yesterday to honor those who have lost their lives and gone missing.

Amanda Vivier, a member of the local task force, says they must bring awareness to the issue as no solid statistics exist for these cases.

"We’re crying out to the community, that’s why we’re trying to get awareness going, is there really is no real solid statistics. The closest thing that we have to statistics right now is in 2016 there was over 6,000 murdered, missing indigenous people and only 113 of those were documented,” She says

Over 200 community members marched with banners around downtown Fargo singing and dancing.

“Not only raising the awareness, and getting the government to step up, but to ask community members to step up as well, to start developing programs, to source for funding for structured building, maybe some land, and start revitalizing the traditional knowledge and culture. And also educating our people and preparing us in case epidemics like such take place here in the Fargo Moorhead area,” Vivier says.

According to The National Institute of Justice, over 84% of indigenousness women have experienced physical, sexual or psychological violence in their lifetime.

The senator says she believes making English an official language would make it harder to produce government documents and important materials in several languages.

In 2007, she supported an amendment backed by Sen. James Inhofe of Oklahoma that would have made English the national language. Inhofe said the amendment was about "preserving our culture and heritage."

BISMARCK, N.D. - A Grand Forks man accused of starting a fire that extensively damaged a Bismarck apartment building has been sentenced to 1 1/2 years of probation after reaching a plea deal with prosecutors.

Eduardo Rodriguez originally was charged with arson and two criminal mischief felonies. Burleigh County State's Attorney Julie Lawyer says the arson charge was reduced to misdemeanor reckless endangerment when lab tests about the origin of the fire were not conclusive and Rodriguez' substance abuse on the night of the fire made intent difficult to prove.

The June 5 fire caused more than $300,000 in damage to the building.

JAMESTOWN, ND (KFGO) - A close call for two adults and two children over the weekend. Their tracked vehicle plunged through thin ice on Lake Audubon northeast of Jamestown and was partially submerged.

Stutsman County Sheriff Chad Kaiser said the tracked vehicle sank in water five-to-six feet deep about 150 feet from shore. The four were able to crawl out a hatch on the roof of the vehicle and were taken to shore one-by-one by first responders. The four were okay but very cold when checked by an ambulance crew that was standing by.

Kaiser says there's been water running through a culvert not far from where the vehicle went under which created the extremely thin ice.

The vehicle was pulled from the lake by a tow truck late Saturday.
