FARGO (KFGO) - Fargo City Commmissioners have decided to stick with a November decision to proceed with a flood levee project aimed at protecting the Belmont Park neighborhood and the water treatment plant on the city's south side.
However, they left open the possibility of saving an historic home in the neighborhood.
Owner John Stern says his home which is among a group of homes that are set be demolished through eminent domain is what he called "an architectural masterpiece" and building a flood wall around the home would not be as expensive as a city buyout.
City Commissioner John Strand recommended a second look. He says if not for the question of the home's historic value, he'd fully support proceeding with the buyout's needed for the levee project.
Commissioners will wait to hear what the Fargo Historic Preservation Commission has to say on the historical importance of Stern's home when it meets later this month.
