Morton County, N.D. (KFGO) - San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kapernick set off a storm of controversy last year when he kneeled instead of standing during the national anthem to protest racial inequality. As a follow-up, he announced he would pledge $1 million to organizations that he said work in "oppressed communities."
According to Kaepernick's website, the donations are in monthly $100,000 allotments to groups of his choice. His latest pledge includes $50,000 to the Mni Wiconi Health Clinic Partnership at Standing Rock Reservation. The free clinic is a partnership between tribal healers and several other groups. The care is aimed at residents on the Standing Rock Reservation, including the expanded population protesting the Dakota Access Protest pipeline project.
In a breakdown on Kaeperneck's web, the clinic pledge will be spent paying for salaries of doctors and nurses, to help build a mobile clinic, medical supplies, and to cover liability insurance.
