FARGO - (KFGO) - The Fargo Planning Commission has approved a zoning change for a major student housing and retail project near the NDSU campus. Other changes were also approved for retail shops in part of the complex and modifications to parking requirements for the $23 million, privately developed project.

It's located on the 1600 block of North University Drive, directly across from the Sanford Health Athletic Complex. The property is owned and administered by the NDSU Foundation and Alumni Association and was acquired over the years for future development.

Foundation President and C-E-O John Glover says demolition of the 21 rental houses now on the block have to be demolished before construction starts this summer. Pending construction schedules the first phase should be ready for use by the fall of 2018.

The four-story complex will have 109 apartments, with a total of 364 beds and about 4,000 square feet of commercial space. The city commission must still sign off on the changes and the developers agreement.
