MINNEAPOLIS (KFGO) - A lawsuit has been filed seeking more than $2 million in damages by a man publicly named as a person of interest in the Jacob Wetterling case.

Danny Heinrich confessed in Sept. to the 1989 abduction, sexual assault and murder ending a 27-year mystery. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his guilty plea to having child pornography.  Seven years ago, the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office named Dan Rassier of St. Joseph as a person of interest in the case and served a search warrant, digging up Rassier’s farmyard.

The attorney for Rassier says the suit is seeking damages from Sheriff John Sanner, a former sheriff’s investigator, BCA agent Kenneth McDonald and Stearns County.

The federal lawsuit accuses the three officers of botching the investigation and ruining an innocent man’s reputation.
