MOORHEAD (KFGO) - An attorney who represents a Moorhead man accused of torturing and killing three cats wants a judge to suppress several key pieces of evidence.
Twenty-three-year-old Jalan Greer is charged with three counts of felony mistreatment of animals. If convicted, he faces up to six years in prison.
In court documents, Greer's attorney says his client gave statements to police that were "involuntary and the result of duress." The attorney also claims evidence taken from Greer's cell phone and a pair of gloves was "unlawfully seized and searched."
Moorhead police were called to an apartment in January on a report of a cat that was heard "fighting for its life." When officers arrived, they found a dead cat on the kitchen floor with blood coming out of its mouth and ears.
The complaint says Greer admitted that he shook the cat and may have squeezed it "harder than he should have". Prosecutors say Greer also told police about two other cats that died in his care.
A court hearing that was scheduled for Thursday was canceled.
