Master's program offers new path for potential teachers

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - North Dakota School Superintendent Kirsten Baesler says she's optimistic that a new degree program at Valley City State and Mayville State will help address a teacher shortage in the state.

The program is geared toward encouraging mid-career professionals in other fields to go into the classroom.

VCSU is taking enrollment applications for its Master of Arts in Teaching program, which it will begin offering in the fall. MSU just recently received approval from the accrediting Higher Learning Commission to offer the program.

Ten $750 scholarships are available to first-semester VCSU students from North Dakota who enroll in the program. MSU hopes to begin offering scholarships in January. Both schools will offer the courses online.

Dickinson State is applying to the Higher Learning Commission this fall to also offer the program.
