FARGO (KFGO) - The editor of North Dakota State University’s student-run newspaper says it's meant to send a message to President Trump. The latest issue of “The Spectrum” devoted its entire front page to publishing the tax returns of several student staff members.
Editor-in-Chief Ben Norman says the students want to encourage Trump to make good on a campaign promise and do the same. “Our message to the President was ‘if you’re going to make promises, you should keep them.’”
Norman said his staff wanted to publish something with more impact than a traditional editorial. “Instead of just writing an editorial with the staff, I thought that carrying it with our own personal tax returns would be a little bit more impactful, a little bit more effective than just words.”
Norman says the editorial "raised some eyebrows" but he says reaction has been generally positive. ‘I think we ruffled a few feathers” he said. “This is not a partisan issue. We’re not attacking President Trump.”
Norman says it’s the first time in recent memory that “The Spectrum” has devoted an entire front page to editorial content.
