FARGO (KFGO) - The committee circulating petitions to recall Fargo City Commissioner Dave Piepkorn for his stance on refugees says the recall will go on. The Fargo-Moorhead Refugee Advisory Council, known as RAC, issued a press release last week calling for an immediate end to the recall, citing threats and harassment against some involved in petition circulation.
Fauzia Haider, among those involved in the citizens group recall, resigned as a member of RAC because of the group's action. Haider says she was "shocked, surprised, and angry" by the demand to stop the recall. She says there have been no reports of any threats against petitioners. Andrew Lenzmeier, who heads up the recall, says the group's demand came "out of left field."
Lenzmeier says the petitions will be turned in next week to the city auditor's office prior the deadline. Backers need just over 3500 valid signatures to declare a special election. Still to be decided is an attorney general's opinion on whether the recall vote can be held this summer.
