MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) - A preliminary report says soil contamination from two underground fuel tanks found during construction on the Clay County jail and law enforcement center in Moorhead is below laboratory detection levels.
The 7,500 gallon tanks are more than a century old. They were used to store heating fuel for the old St. Ansgar Hospital building, which demolished in the 1950’s.
The report says residual contaminants are below laboratory detection levels, and were likely removed during excavation. The report also says underlying clay in the soil appears to have contained the leaking contaminants.
The existence of the tanks was unknown for decades. There was still some fuel in the tanks when a construction crew found them last month.
