BISMARCK, N.D. (KFGO) - The head of the North Dakota Attorney General's Consumer Protection Division has issued another warning about sweepstake scams.
Parrell Grossman says in the past 12 months, elderly residents have reported losses of more than $366,000. Grossman says those are the losses that have been reported. He believes that's only the "tip of the iceberg" and there many be many more.
He says the losses are not small. People have lost $50,000 to $200,000 in a matter of weeks. Grossman says that has had some "terrible consequences" for the elderly, who are the favored targets.
Grossman says some of the recent victims have been told they won a prize from Publishers Clearing House, which is often used by scam artists because of the name recognition. He advises families to talk with elderly parents and relatives about the scam.
