FARGO (KFGO) - The regional manager of Fargo's first methadone clinic said the opioid treatment center has 42 clients since opening two months ago.

Mark Schaefer, with Community Medical Services, said that's very rapid growth for these types of clinics. He expects that number to grow to 200 to 250 clients. Some are referrals but most of those looking to get off prescription drugs or heroin are coming to the Fargo clinic through word-of-mouth.

He said, "We definately see the network for opioids in the community...it's vast and everyone knows everyone. That means that people are able to spread the word for others."

Schaefer saids the methadone treatments are strictly regulated by medical professionals on staff and there is counseling during the recovery.

North Dakota also has methadone clinics in Bismarck and Minot.
