MOORHEAD, Minn. (KFGO) - The trial for a man accused of torturing and killing three cats in Moorhead has been delayed as attorneys wrangle over evidence issues.
Jalan Greer was scheduled to go on trial July 25. Greer is charged with three counts of felony mistreatment of animals.
During a hearing Thursday, defense attorney Christopher Cadem told a judge that he's still waiting for prosecutors to provide evidence he requested earlier. Cadem said the evidence includes text messages and an audio recording of a witness that may have been destroyed.
Assistant Clay County Attorney Pam Harris says she's not aware of an audio recording and says no evidence has been withheld.
Cadem says he intends to file a motion to dismiss two of the charges. He's also filed documents indicating that he plans to present evidence of an "alternative perpetrator" during Greer's trial.
According to court documents, Greer admitted he shook one of the cats that died and may have squeezed it "harder than he should have". The complaint says Greer also told police about two other cats that died in his care.
