Preliminary Fargo budget includes two mill cut in property tax levy

FARGO (KFGO) - Fargo City Commissioners have approved the preliminary 2017 budget. The total budget will increase 1.65% to $265.5 million.

It includes a $2 million decrease for property taxes, $1 million more than Mayor Tim Mahoney first proposed.

Commissioners Tony Gehrig and John Strand pushed for another mill of property tax relief but a motion for an additional reduction in the mill levy failed. Mahoney says the budget includes adding five additional police officers and additional personnel for the health department to help deal with the opioid crisis.

A public hearing on the budget is scheduled Sept. 26. The budget has to be finalized by Oct. 7.
