Metro COG study focuses on growing needs of 17th Ave. South

FARGO (KFGO) - The long-term outlook for one of Fargo's most heavily-traveled thoroughfares is under scrutiny.

Metro COG is conducting a study to identify future needs and issues along 17th Ave. South. The street is one of a few arteries that stretch all the way from the Red River to West Fargo.

Project engineer Mike Bittner says "every aspect of transportation" for 17th Ave. South is being examined. “It’s going through an identity crisis” Bittner said. It’s been identified as really a livable corridor for pedestrians and bicyclists, but if you look at the really dense commercial areas west of I-29, you can see a really different personality of the corridor, and it’s trying to move a lot of traffic.”

Bittner says the 17th Ave. corridor is unique because it connects 10 parks, a high school, an elementary school and dense commercial areas.  Improvements on the eastern half of 17th Avenue will focus on bicycle facilities. The western half will involve all modes of transportation.

A public input meeting and workshop will be held at West Acres Shopping Center next Tuesday, Oct. 24.
