FARGO (KFGO) - New court documents specify damages sought by the mother of a special needs child who was allegedly abused while attending school in Verndale, Minn.
Julie Denny filed a federal lawsuit in June on behalf of her 9-year-old daughter against the Bertha-Hewitt Public School District. Denny is seeking more than $300,000.
Attorney Margaret Kane is asking for $200,000 for lost education, psychological and emotional damages, $101,000 for fees and costs and $2,200 for behavioral evaluations.
The girl was allegedly slapped on the face, sprayed with a water bottle and placed in restraints.
Kane says after the Minnesota Dept. of Education opened a maltreatment complaint against the school, a paraprofessional was criminally charged and pleaded guilty.
