2nd Street floodwall project now complete

Fargo, N.D. (KFGO) - City and county officials, along with a U.S. senator, celebrated the completion of a $40 million floodwall with a ribbon cutting ceremony Tuesday.

"Projects like this are going to make our city a very lovable city and a very protected city," Mayor Tim Mahoney said. "I think people can sleep better at night knowing this is done."

The floodwall along 2nd Street was an added modification to the Army Corps of Engineers’ original flood project and allows greater river flows through the city, up to 35 feet, removes the need for temporary clay levees along 2nd Street in Fargo and substantially reduces the need for upstream staging during major flood events.

"We are on our way now,” Sen. John Hoeven said, during the event. “We are authorized and have an appropriation. We will be working on getting more appropriations. We cannot stop. We have to get permanent flood protection for our region.”

Next summer, workers will finish the sidewalks and trails along the floodwall along with staining the concrete wall.

The project was officially finished Tuesday and 2nd St. north of 1st Ave., which had been closed since last October, reopened shortly after the ribbon cutting.
