BISMARCK (KFGO) - A man, hospitalized after being shot multiple times by Bismarck police late Monday night was not armed. Officers were responding to a 911 call from a man who claimed he was holding two people hostage at gunpoint at a softball field. Police say there was no hostage situation but one of the officers was confronted 49-year old Glen Lovgren of Bismarck who assumed a "shooters stance" and appeared to point a gun at the officer.

Sgt. Mark Buschena says other officers at the scene felt the other officer was in "eminent danger of serious bodily injury or death and used deadly force."

Lovgren's condition is not known but he was in surgery much of the morning.

Police say Lovgren was shot by police in 2011 when he held a person hostage at a Bismarck mobile home. During negotations with police he threatened to shoot them. He was shot when he came out and pointed a gun at an officer. He was sentenced to 7 years in prison for terrorizing and illegal possession of a firearm.

The three officers involved in Monday night's shooting are on administrative leave. The state crime bureau is handling the investigation.
